We drove home along the highway, between the river and the sea. I parked the truck in the gravel by the river, and we sat together and waited in the dimming light. The sound of unseen birds soon filled the air, traveling primordial paths home to roost. Then dusk came and all was still, and a peacefulness settled over the land.
